‘Cigarette Sculptures’ (2017) consists of ten 10x9” watercolors, each depicting different arrangements of cigarettes. Being a native of the piedmont of North Carolina I feel a personal connection to the tobacco industry. The smell of curing tobacco clung to the streets of downtown Durham, NC, my hometown, for most of my childhood. I am attracted to cigarettes as objects: the semaphore-like simplicity of their design, their sweet smell. Cigarettes are alluring and venomous, deeply complex objects with tricky psychological powers. These drawings of sculptures of cigarettes are an attempt to contend with that destructive power.
