"Cornrows have been around for thousands of years, originating in Africa and the Caribbean. Stretching as far back as 3000 BC, cornrows have been used to authenticate both men and women in their societies. That being said, there are many creative renditions and purposes of the cornrows that have been adapted to distinguish the nuances of tribal members. More recently, the rows of this style reflected the fields in which African men and women would work. Cornrows were also used to smuggle rice on slave ships, planting grains between their scalp and weaving the hair over it, helping them ensure that they had something to eat in their dire moments. This style made its first television appearance in 1962 when Cicely Tyson wore the look on the series East Side, West Side, where it was considered “unfinished,” even “messy” by white viewers. It later gained mainstream popularity during the late 20th century, becoming a form of self-love and expression during the 1990s–2000s with Allen Iverson. This NBA all-star built a reputation for wearing a variety of creative cornrow styles. Rows are a form of braid where the hair is woven along the scalp falling towards the shoulders.
