On March 14, 2020, while the coronavirus pandemic continued to grip the world, Adad Hannah began his Social Distancing Portraits. A compilation of short, unedited videos comprised of the people he encountered on the street, the portraits include a diverse range of individuals, families, friends, shopkeepers, students, a clinic worker and even those recorded in their homes, all using a long lens from a distance of at least 5 metres. While shot on the streets in his neighbourhood in Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver, and largely containing images of strangers from afar, these works are very much portraits—intimate, unwavering, and direct.
Technically, these works are short, non-narrative videos set to atmospheric music that amplifies the poignancy of the works’ subjects. However, at approximately 20 seconds in length, these durational works seem to flicker somewhere between still and moving images. The subjects remain static while typically gazing directly at the camera. The works act as studies of the individuals featured with the durational component serving to intensify the viewer’s gaze and, ultimately, their relationship with the subject.
First presented on social media, the videos are accompanied by quotes from the individuals presented, offering further insight into their thoughts and emotional states during this uncertain time. Their concerns echo one another and are often related to financial stress, panic buying, and the isolation with which people are faced. Shot during a period of “social distancing” mandated by health and governmental authorities in an attempt to deter the further spread of the coronavirus, the portraits serve as a powerful reminder of the ability art has to connect across physical distance.
Collectors are invited to select 10 videos from the more than 200 videos posted on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adadhannah/. The artist will then prepare a unique compilation just for the collector offered on a hard drive. Each of the videos will be offered in an edition of 5 and will not be available anymore to other collectors when the five selected are sold. The total duration of the 10 compilation is of 5 minutes. The asking price is 5,750$ but more videos can be added to the initial compilation for an additional 500$ each. Il s'agit d'une compilation de courtes vidéos non montées qui représentent les personnes qu'il a rencontrées dans la rue. Les portraits comprennent des individus, des familles, des amis, des commerçants, des étudiants, un employé de clinique et même ceux qui sont enregistrés chez eux, tous utilisant un objectif long d'une distance d'au moins 5 mètres. Bien qu'elles aient été réalisées dans les rues de son quartier de Burnaby, en banlieue de Vancouver, et qu'elles contiennent en grande partie des images d'étrangers venus de loin, ces œuvres sont des portraits très intimes, inébranlables et directs.
Techniquement, il s'agit de courtes vidéos non narratives sur une musique d'ambiance qui amplifie la poignante intensité des sujets. Cependant, d'une durée d'environ 20 secondes, ces œuvres de longue durée semblent osciller entre images fixes et images animées. Les sujets restent statiques tout en regardant généralement directement la caméra. Réalisés au cours d'une période de "distanciation sociale" imposée par les autorités sanitaires et gouvernementales dans le but d'empêcher la propagation du coronavirus, les portraits rappellent avec force la capacité de l'art à établir des liens au-delà de la distance physique.
Les collectionneurs sont invités à sélectionner 10 vidéos parmi les plus de 200 vidéos publiées sur Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/adadhannah/. L'artiste préparera ensuite une compilation unique pour le collectionneur, offerte sur un disque dur. Chacune des vidéos sera proposée en une édition de 5 et ne sera plus disponible pour les autres collectionneurs lorsque les cinq sélectionnées seront vendues. La durée totale des 10 compilations est de 5 minutes. Le prix demandé est de 5 750$ mais d'autres vidéos peuvent être ajoutées à la compilation initiale pour un supplément de 500$ chacune.
