Luc se trouve ici dans le parc qui autrefois faisait face au couvent des filles de St-Joseph. C’est là que vivait Mademoiselle Elizabeth Ferrand, philosophe du 18e siècle, qui inspira le traité des sensations de Condillac. Luc fait ici une sorte de pèlerinage sur un haut-lieu de la féminisation de la pensée scientifique qu’il associe à l’invention des premiers dispositifs immersifs. On peut le lire à ce sujet dans son livre d’art « L’invention de l’horizon », (2019).

Luc is in the park that once faced the convent of the girls of St. Joseph. This is where Miss Elizabeth Ferrand, the 18th century philosopher who inspired the treatise on the sensations of Condillac, lived. Luc is making a kind of pilgrimage here to a high place of the feminization of scientific thought, which he associates with the invention of the first immersive devices. We can read about it in his art book “L'invention de l'horizon”, (2019).

Conçu par l'artiste à la fin des années 1990, le Panoscope est un dispositif de projection panoramique monocanale et une méthode de prise de vue adaptée à sa géométrie. La série photographique Journal panoscopique de Luc Courchesne, commencée en 2000, présente des anamorphoses de l’espace environnant tel que vu par le système optique qu’il utilise. Les œuvres font appel à une forme d'interactivité, les spectateurs étant invités à faire tourner le disque sur lui-même pour privilégier l’un ou l’autre des multiples points-de-vue qu’offre cette représentation photographique de l’horizon dans son entièreté.

Designed by the artist in the late 1990s, the Panoscope is a single channel panoramic projection apparatus and a picture taking method adapted to its geometry. Luc Courchesne’s photographic series Journal panoscopique, begun in 2000, presents anamorphic representations of the surrounding space as seen by the optical system he uses. The works call for a form of interactivity, with viewers encouraged to rotate the disc on itself to select one of the multiple views offered by this photographic representation of the entire horizon.
