« Invasive Species is a new series of green-coloured drawings that are inspired by decorative Chinoiserie patterns as well as carefully observed plants and insects thriving in my own garden.
Chinoiserie was born from the idea of Orientalism, a fictional cultural, geographical and social order constructed by the west in the 17th century. Astutely observed by Edward Said: this Other, deemed as docile and inferior, allowed the Europeans to proclaim itself as progressive, superior and powerful.
Invasive Species, presents seemingly strange and transgressive hybridized plant creatures that resist simple categorization, while bearing witness to the disruptions and unease brought on by the pandemic. » -Ed Pien
