« This hand-cut paper artwork began around the same time as the exhibition « Under Water » at Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain and was finally completed in 2014. Many of the cut works in that exhibition drew inspiration from the astoundingly beautiful works created by Ernst Haeckel. His highly detailed and intricate images were based on direct observations of both micro and macro underwater fauna. I find myself inspired by these real yet seemingly fantastical presences. Additionally, the depicted structural details of certain creatures are reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch’s imaginary architectures, as seen in his painting, The Garden of Earthly Delights, which, incidentally, predates Haeckel’s work by nearly two centuries.» - Ed Pien
