Stephane Alexis is an emerging Caribbean-Canadian artist living in Ottawa. His work stems from his personal experiences, demographics, namely within the Black community, and sub demographics in which he belongs, exploring masculinity, and a multi-faceted understanding of healthcare. For each project, a large amount of research is conducted using both lived experiences and external sources to guide project direction. This research using primary and secondary sources is often incorporated with the visual work, leading to small essay-style writing. Alexis also works closely with community collaborators, including experts who work with these demographics to realize each project. His photo-based work combines both conceptual research-driven design with aesthetic quality. His desire is to bring attention, focus, and transparency to people and communities that are overlooked due to the hardships they face and the unwillingness we have as people to acknowledge those hardships. He uses visual qualities as a bridge to give insight on issues and circumstances facing these communities both locally and globally through the subject matter. He believes that we can only come to solutions if we identify issues, and we can do this by communicating openly with each other and allow the negativity and difficulties to come to the surface. He uses the print, screens, projections, etc. as the surface in which these narratives are displayed.
