Roland Poulin was born in 1940 in Saint-Thomas (Ontario). In 1944 his family moved to Montreal. He studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and began to exhibit his work at the end of the Sixties. Subsequently, his work appeared in the best galleries and several museums, in Quebec and elsewhere. In 1994, a large retrospective exhibition was devoted to his work at the National Gallery of Canada. Parallel to his artistic career, Roland Poulin has also taught drawing and sculpture – at the Université de Laval (1973 to 1981) and at the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa (since 1987). He has won several awards, including the prix Ozias-Leduc from the Fondation Émile-Nelligan (1992), the Victor-Martyn-Lynch-Staunton Prize from the Canada Arts Council (1996), the Jean A. Chalmers National Prize for Visual Arts from the Fondation Chalmers (1998) and recently, the prix Paul-Émile-Borduas, one of the Prix du Québec, awarded by the ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec (2001). Since 1986, Roland Poulin lives and works in Sainte-Angèle-de-Monnoir (Québec).
