Perforated represents a further exploration into the window motif that is characteristic of Hildebrand's work. In this painting, panels and portholes are layered over the image of a botanical garden, rendered in a distant blur. The highly textured canvas reveals a process of scraping, scratching, cutting and pasting, bringing the surface into uneasy balance with its image. Part of a larger series based on greenhouses and botanical gardens, Perforated examines the unique interior experience these places offer of the natural world. This is the first piece of a new series for his upcoming exhibition at Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain in the spring of 2022.
