No state was made in partnership with three women on Fogo Island, Newfoundland: Violet Combden, Millicent Dwyer and Lillian Dwyer, who Klintberg has been collaborating with since 2014. It is a queen-sized quilt that features a text drawing based on a quote from Pierre Elliott Trudeau. In the late 1960s, Trudeau said that there is no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation. This statement served to fuel changes to anti-sodomy laws and to decriminalize elements of same sex activity. It’s a powerful statement, but one that overlooks something about sexuality and gender: they don’t only exist in the bedroom and also, perhaps shouldn’t be at all framed by the state or the nation. No state's version of this text suggests questioning the state, the place, the nation, and the bedroom as locations where identity is articulated, functioning as a diagram with which to imagine all the in-between spaces involved in these terms and how we imagine their meaning. The quilt uses fabric from the artist's personal collection and those of the three quilters. His first project with these three quilters was to make a series of ten quilts all responding to another quote from Trudeau - also taken up by artist Joyce Wieland, who has been a frequent research subject for Klintberg.
